You may use any edition of the text that you can find.

Recommended Calculator:  Texas Instruments TI-83 or TI-83 plus.  TI-81, TI-82.

http://www.watchmeware.com/ti83ptutor.html

I do not allow calculators with a Computer Algebra System during exams, such as the TI-89 and TI-92.

Exams will be given after each chapter.  Chapter exams are worth 100 points.  The comprehensive final exam will be worth 100 points.

There are no make up exams after the exam date, no exceptions.  Make up exams are allowed only if arrangements are made well in advance of the exam date.     Exam dates will be announced about a week in advance.

Quizzes (Fun) are given with each chapter.  It is your responsibility to get a copy of the Fun.  I will not keep copies of the quizzes or any other handout after the date they are given.  If there are leftover copies, they go into an envelope under the Slacker Box, outside my office.  Once I have graded the fun they will not be accepted for a grade for any reason.  There are no make up quizzes.  Late fun will not be accepted for any reason.

Grades are computed as the number of points earned divided by the number of points possible.  There is no extra credit.  90-100% is an A, 80-89% is a B, etc.

Please feel free to let me know if there is anything I can do to make our class time more effective.   If you know or suspect you have any type of disability, learning or otherwise, please come see me so that we can create a better learning environment for you.  If you miss a class, please make sure you get the notes from a fellow student.  Please send me an email or leave a voice message if you miss a couple of days of class, just to let me know you have not dropped.

If you miss class when I have returned exams or fun assignments, they will be in the slacker box which is on a desk to the left of my office, Batmale 760.  The math department is open from 8 am to 4 pm.

What you can expect from me:

1. I will begin and end class on time.

2. I will come to class prepared.

3. Respect and Encouragement.  I respect your decision to continue your education.  I assume you are here because you want to be.  If this is not the case, drop the class.

4. I encourage students with disabilities, including “invisible” disabilities like chronic diseases and learning disabilities, to explain their needs and appropriate accommodation to me during my office hour.

5. I will not tolerate rude behavior or intolerance towards your fellow student.

6. I will not tolerate cheating.  You may not use notes or any electronic devices besides calculators in class.  You must let me know if you leave the room to use the restroom.  Only one student may leave the room at a time.

What I expect from you:

1. Come to class on time and prepared to ask questions.  Coming late disrupts the class.  I will not explain material covered in your absence.

2.  I require you to respect the needs of your fellow students.  This includes talking during class.  If you can’t wait to talk to your friends, don’t come.

3. I do not grade on attendance.  If you do not want to be in class and do not want to learn.  Don’t come and make it harder for others to.

4. If you miss a class you must get the notes from another student.  Get contact information from at least 3 other students for this purpose.  It is not my job to tell you what the homework is.

Exam Policies.

You may not use your book, notes, or your cell phone during the exam.

If you want to use scratch paper, you must show it to me beforehand to ensure there are no notes on it.

If you turn in scratch paper to show your work it must be numbered and organized in such a way that I can tell which problem it belongs to.

If you must go to the restroom, please leave your exam and cell phone on my desk.  Only one person may go to the restroom at a time.
